October 12, 1978 will go down as one of the darkest days in rock and roll. After being alerted to "trouble in room 100" from a mysterious caller outside Chelsea Hotel in New York, the hotel clerk alerted police who would come to find Sex Pistols member Sid Vicious suffering from a bout of drug use and his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, dead on the bathroom floor. Nancy had suffered a stab wound to her abdomen and appeared to have bled to death. Sid Vicious was subsequently arrested and charged with her murder only to attempt suicide ten days later by slitting his wrist with a smashed light bulb. After being admitted to Bellevue Hospital, he attempted his own death again by trying to jump out of a window, crying out "I want to be with my Nancy." On the night of February 1, 1979, Vicious overdosed on heroin and, despite being revived by friends, he was dead the next morning. According to reports, his mother found a suicide note in his jacket that read, "We had a death pact, and I have to keep my half of the bargain. Please bury me next to my baby. Bury me in my leather jacket, jeans and motorcycle boots. Goodbye". Unfortunately, she didn't find this until after his cremation, though it wouldn't have mattered as Spungen was buried in a Jewish cemetery where Vicious would not be allowed.
