In the film, a group of teenagers in the small town of Mill Valley follow a string of mysterious murders and try to solve them. Im 1968, the teens discover a book full of scary stories inside a run-down mansion that had belonged to the Bellows family. In the book, a young girl named Sarah writes of mysterious tales and terrible secrets… and as the kids soon find out, reading the book causes a chain reaction of events that are truly unsettling and downright horrific!!!
If the premise of all this sounds familiar, that’s because for generation of avid children’s book readers, it is!! The movie, and its screenplay (written by Dan and Kevin Hageman) are based on the popular children’s book trilogy by author Alvin Schwartz. First published in the 1980s and then again in the 1990s under the same title as the movie, Scary Stories was a horrifying trio of tales that definitely kept many children awake and in fear way past their bedtime at night!!
The one main difference, as you might have guessed, is that the Hageman brothers’ screenplay attempts to reconcile all three separate stories in one big movie — so the flick won’t perfectly follow the book. But that’s OK! We’re still looking forward to it!!
