Night of the Living Dead (1968)Sick of making TV commercials, director George Romero decided to make a horror movie with his friends -- and basically invented our modern idea of zombies, which before then were strictly a result of voodoo. Not only that, the story of several strangers stranded in a farm house while being surrounded by flesh-eating zombies was more thought-provoking and enduring than anyone expected, touching on issues like the Vietnam War, the collapse of the contemporary family, and the terrifying effects of racism. The film was especially significant due to its release at the height of the civil rights movement, combined with the fact Romero cast a black actor (Duane Jones) in the lead role.
