Psycho (1960)Widely regarded as Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece, this film is also said to be the start of the slasher genre, inspiring everything from 'Halloween' to 'Scream.' Each of the shots, especially that iconic, spine-tingling shower scene, was designed to let the audience fill in the more frightening bits with their imagination. The effect was not only a wildly successful film -- it broke box office records in the U.S., Japan, France, Britain, and Canada -- but a post-modern horror staple that filmmakers still emulate to this day.
