Poltergeist (1982)Back in the day, some of the scariest haunted house movies were ones which never actually showed the ghosts. That all changed when Steven Spielberg joined forces with 'Texas Chain Saw Massacre' director Tobe Hooper. Together they used a big budget and cutting edge techniques to make something no one had ever seen. The tale of an upper-middle class household being torn apart by unruly supernatural forces gives a chilling commentary on corporate greed and the bloody soil the American dream has been built on. Thanks to its contained story and terrifying visuals -- the film used a blend of computer technology and grotesque practical effects -- this blockbuster made a killing at the box office and became an instant horror classic. It spawned a series of sequels, a remake, and countless other heightened haunted house films.
