Chris Rock did NOT hold back in calling out Jussie Smollett last night at the NAACP Image Awards…
The comedian came on stage at one point in the middle of the show to present an award, but when he got to the mic, he quickly made a left turn to tell a few jokes before getting down to the presentation. And all those jokes — every single one — came at Smollett’s expense.

Speaking to the audience both in the crowd and on TV, Rock said (below):
“They said no Jussie Smollett jokes, but… what a waste of light skin. You know what I could do with that light skin? That curly hair? My career would be out of here. I would be running Hollywood. What the hell was he thinking? You are ‘Jessie’ from now on. You don’t even get the ‘u’ anymore. That ‘u’ is respect. You ain’t getting no respect from me.”
WOW!!!
Rock transitioned to presenting the award after that, but he drew a TON of laughs for it — a sign that others in the audience were definitely feeling the same way as the comedian.

Ooooof!
That’s SUPER awkward for Jussie, considering he was nominated for an Image Award for his role in Empire. The actor ultimately lost out on that category — and he wasn’t in the audience for the show, anyways — but he must have seen/heard about this bit after it happened last night. Yikes!

Smollett is still catching quite a bit of media attention even after all the felony charges against him in that alleged attempted attack hoax were dropped. Just yesterday, the prosecutor in his case wrote a public op-ed in the Chicago Tribune explaining why she didn’t pursue charges against the actor and, in the piece, she explicitly repeated that Smollett has not been exonerated of any crime, seemingly trying to remind everyone of his de facto public guilt. Not a great week for Jussie!!
What do U think about Chris Rock’s comments here, Perezcious readers?! Do they go too far, or were they perfectly said, considering the situation and crowd present?? Pretty telling, no?!
